Micro-patterned cellulose films for flexible electrodes in medical implants

Neuromodulation treatments are based on the functional interface between brain and man-made electrodes. Chronic inflammation around implant, however, occurs as a result of mechanical mismatching soft tissue stiff metallic electrode. After water uptake, cellulose films should prevent encapsulation In this work, we reinforced with silk fibre networks, improving tear strength by factor four to seven maintaining flexibility, characterised an elastic modulus 100 200 MPa. Whereas sputtered gold flat exhibited restricted adhesion, micro-patterning guaranteed reasonable adhesion nanometre-thin substrates. Micro-patterned coated in 80 nm-thin retained conductivity for strains large 30%, while sheet resistance increased about 30. Fabrication biocompatible electrodes is efficient compatible large-scale production.

We reported fabrication of patterned flexible MECs using inkjet printing. The strategy can effectively simplify the fabrication process, thus reducing the cost. The obtained flexible MECs exhibited a very high specific capacitance of 6.4 mF cm(-2), and revealed long-term cycling stability.
